Origin and geology
Like calcite, aragonite consists of calcium carbonate, but differs in its crystal structure. While the crystal system of calcite is trigonal, that of aragonite is rhombic. Aragonite crystals are usually long and acicular, clusters of acicular aragonite crystals are also known as frost work.
Aragonite occurs in a variety of colors, with blue aragonite being particularly prized due to its rarity. The blue tones give this piece an unmistakable appearance. Together with the filigree growth form, it makes this specimen a unique work of art of nature.
